PARR BEGINS STOCKING RECYCLED PLASTIC TIMBERS

Decision is another step in the company’s “Get Real” efforts.

HILLSBORO, Ore. — Parr Lumber announced today that it will begin offering recycled plastic timbers in each of the company’s 26 lumber yards. The patented product – called SmarTimberZ is exclusively supplied by Verde Sales LLC, a Portland, Oregon distributor of unique and “green” products.

The product is as an environmentally sustainable and structurally superior building material.  It is often used for playgrounds, raised beds and retaining walls and doesn’t rot, splinter, leach chemicals or require long-term maintenance.  The addition of this unique product is another effort in Parr’s recently launched “Get Real” program, which clearly identifies products that are made in an eco-friendly manor.

SmarTimberZ 8 foot long by 6 inch square beams contain no wood whatsoever.  Plastic lumber has taken a large portion of the wood decking market, but brands like Trex and TimberTech are typically combinations of both wood and plastic.  SmarTimberZ are entirely recycled plastic, most of which comes from empty milk jugs, yogurt containers and plastic bottles.  Each timber recycles the equivalent of 422 plastic milk jugs, and saves 144 cubic feet of landfill space.  The product is made entirely in the United States, and is exclusively distributed in the Northwest by Verde Sales.

Being recycled from the bottom up has distinct advantages.  Molding allows the timbers to weigh less than half of their wooden counterparts while retaining enormous strength.  It also creates features such as interlocking ribs, places to cut the timbers cleanly and pre-made holes for securing them in place – all missing in treated wood or railroad ties.  The net result is faster construction time, lower labor costs and a much longer useful life.  Unlike wood products, SmarTimberZ carry a 50 year warranty.

Parr “Gets Real”

The Parr Company’s “Get Real” Program, launched in November of 2007, is designed to aid customers in their search to sustainable and eco-friendly products. Each product clearly labeled with the “Get Real” logo has met the standards of the program. Over 150 in-store items received the “Get Real” label.  In addition there are hundreds, if not thousands of lumber related products such as:  doors, and windows that qualify for the designation. In addition to the lumber yards, Parr Cabinet Outlets also feature numerous “Get Real” products.
